Here at ISEC, we are camera nerds. We simply love them despite their ambiguity. They are like teenagers - when you think you've figured them out, something you didn't expect happens.  One of the challenges working with these creatures is ther non-binary nature.  Sure, we can calculate number of pixels and determine what the camera "should see". In reality though, there are always more than one variable that interact to create the end result.  Here for instance, when the angle of light altered by a few degrees makes all the difference in our ability to see something. Throw in electrostatic interference from radiation and you get a picture (pun intended) of the challenges we face (and love)!
